Outreach

It is the mission of the Outreach Department to bring to the attention of our congregation the needs of others and our role as followers of Jesus Christ.  We encourage members to involve themselves in the caring work of Jesus, believing that our lives become the hands and feet, that enable God’s work to be done in this world.  One way we become that hands and feet is through a group in the church called Helping Hands, which on a monthly basis works for various members of the community doing home maintenance tasks that the home owner is unable to do for themselves.

Another way is through our Food Pantry. We also seek to do Jesus’ work in the world through our support of local organizations like City Union Mission, Interfaith Hospitality network, Restart, COPP, and Cherith Brook.

We support the various divisions of the Disciples Mission Fund by seeking to educate our members concerning the work of the centers which fall under the Disciples Homeland Ministries. We are entrusted with promoting the six special offerings that occur during the year.  It is this department’s mission to raise the vision and the ability of our church members to follow in the footsteps of our Lord.  Through the Division of Overseas Ministries, we support Global Ministries, a joint effort of the Disciples of Christ and United Church of Christ.

helping handsHelping Hands

The Outreach Committee is proud to present “Helping Hands Ministry”.  We are very excited to share this program with our congregation and our community.  The Helping Hands Ministry consists of able-bodied folks who would like to contribute their time and skills in helping out our members at Cherokee Church, unable to perform particular tasks or maintenance jobs at their home.   We meet in the parking lot to prepare tools, supplies and ask Jesus, our head carpenter for guidance through the day. We are so excited to offer this Outreach Program to our members and eventually to our community neighbors in need.  All donations will be given to Outreach.  If you are interested in volunteering your gifts and talents, please contact the church office at 913-362-7077 or cherokeechrist@aol.com. Please consider being part of this wonderful opportunity.

Established in the 1970s, the Food Pantry serves individuals of the Greater Kansas City area.
The Food Pantry has sustained largely through the efforts of Disciples Women and the church Outreach committee.  The food donations are given by members of the church and community.  Twice a year a car load of food is taken to Catholic Charities.  This is a part of our commitment to Church Women United.
